Polished, honed, thermal or rock-face granite finishes

Choose a granite finish by location, cleaning method, required visual effect and the project’s performance requirements. A polished surface reflects light, a honed surface is more matte, a thermal finish has pronounced microtexture, and a rock face creates deep relief. No finish name alone guarantees slip performance or compliance with a standard — that requires testing of the actual product.

Why one stone looks different in different finishes

Finishing changes how a surface reflects and scatters light. A polished sample may appear darker and more contrasting than a honed one. A thermal surface often looks lighter because of its microtexture. A deep rock face creates shadows and an uneven visual pattern.

This does not mean the stone’s natural composition has changed. Compare samples from the same current batch in the finishes required for the project. Photographs taken under different lighting are not suitable for precise colour approval.

Finish Visual character Maintenance Typical areas to verify in design
Polished gloss, reflection, pronounced pattern streaks and fingerprints are visible; gentle cleaning required interiors, vertical surfaces, worktops
Honed matte or semi-matte, calmer contrast small marks may be less visible; compatible chemistry still required interior plates, window sills, cladding
Thermal granular, textured, without mirror gloss texture can retain more dirt exterior paving, steps, entrance areas
Rock face deep natural relief and shadow more difficult cleaning because of large level differences facades, plinths, fences, accent elements

The table describes general character; it does not establish technical values or universal suitability.

Polished surface

A polished finish emphasises grain and visual depth. It is used for cladding plates, window sills and interior details. For a work surface, approve edges, cut-outs, cleaning-product compatibility and a physical sample separately.

Do not transfer the appearance of polishing from one stone to another: different mineral patterns produce different results.

Honed surface

A honed finish maintains flat geometry without mirror gloss. Approve the degree of matte appearance from a sample: “honed” does not define one universal sheen level.

Thermal surface

A thermal finish creates microtexture. It is often considered for paving slabs and outdoor steps. However, “thermal means non-slip” is too broad. Stone, process, water, contamination, gradient and wear all affect performance. Where a rated requirement applies, test the actual surface.

Rock-face texture

A rock-face finish has deep relief and natural-looking splits. It is related to rock-face slabs and facade elements. It is not selected where a precise flat plane or simple wiping is required.

Also compare split and sawn-and-split finishes for setts.

Finish approval checklist

  1. Define location, loading and cleaning method.
  2. Approve a physical sample from the current batch.
  3. View it dry and wet.
  4. Record acceptable chips, relief and sheen level.
  5. For slip requirements, state the test method rather than a marketing description.
  6. Do not mix finishes without a trial layout.

For external surfaces, see the guides on paving grip and granite for outdoor steps.

Frequently asked questions

Which finish is least slippery?

There is no universal answer. Compare test results for the actual product under conditions defined by the project.

Can one batch be made in two finishes?

Yes, but approve them side by side: colour and pattern can look different because of light reflection.

Which surface is easiest to maintain?

A flat surface is generally easier to clean than deep relief, but cleaning products and acceptable soiling depend on the application.
