Gabbro and granite: careful terminology
The Encyclopedia of Modern Ukraine describes gabbro as an intrusive igneous rock of basic composition. Granite is also intrusive and igneous but has a different mineral composition and typical visual character. “Black granite” can therefore be a commercial description of dark stone rather than a precise petrographic classification.
A specification should record the agreed material name, sample source and sample photograph instead of replacing everything with “black”. The NIKA GRAN stone range shows a physical Bukynske gabbro sample, but a screen cannot reproduce colour with absolute accuracy.
| Question | Gabbro | Granite | What to approve |
|---|---|---|---|
| Geological name | separate igneous rock of basic composition | igneous rock of different composition | material name in the order |
| Visual character | often dark; assess grain size for the actual variety and sample | may be grey, red, pink or another colour | current batch sample |
| After polishing | dark tone may appear deeper | pattern and contrast depend on the material | required finish on a sample |
| Finished products | variation may occur between blocks and cuts | also naturally variable | acceptable range of variation |
The table does not establish physical or mechanical values and does not transfer the properties of one sample to an entire rock type.
How finish changes perception
A polished surface increases visual depth and reflection. A honed surface appears more restrained. A thermal or relief surface scatters light and may appear lighter. These are visual observations, not a promise of a particular shade.
Request samples in the finishes intended for the project. One polished fragment does not fully describe sawn paving, split setts or cladding plates.
Typical uses of dark stone
Gabbro is used for paving slabs, cladding, slabs and memorial products. Suitability for a particular format follows the design, finish, supporting construction and maintenance requirements. The material name does not replace a technical brief.
Where polished and textured exterior elements are combined, approve them side by side: different finishes on the same stone can create a pronounced contrast.
Batch approval protocol
- Record the material name and sample date.
- Request a physical sample from the current batch.
- Approve every required finish separately.
- Define acceptable natural variation.
- View the sample dry and wet and under different lighting.
- Do not treat a photograph as a guarantee of exact colour or stock.

Frequently asked questions
Is Bukynske gabbro a black granite?
Dark stone may be called “black granite” commercially, but gabbro is a separate geological rock. Use the agreed material name in project documents.
Will the whole batch be absolutely black?
No. Natural stone varies, and perceived tone also changes with finish, moisture and lighting. Approve a physical current-batch sample.
Can the material be selected from a photograph alone?
A photograph is useful for preliminary selection, not final approval of colour, grain and finish.
