Define what is being ordered
A granite slab is a large blank for further cutting, while a cladding plate or rock-face slab may be closer to a finished component. Granite blocks are another level of blank and logistics. Do not combine these in one request line without describing subsequent processing.
| Bulk specification section | Record |
|---|---|
| Material | name, permitted alternatives and physical batch sample |
| Geometry | length, width, thickness and units |
| Tolerances | agreed range for each component group |
| Surface | sawn, polished, honed, thermal or relief finish |
| Edges | unfinished, straight, chamfered or profiled |
| Marking | item code, drawing, row and installation location |
| Packing | crate type, separators, corner protection and stacking limits |
| Inspection | quantity, visible defects, marking and crate condition at receipt |
Approve the batch and variation range
Natural stone does not have an absolutely identical pattern. Catalogue photographs help establish direction, but serial fabrication requires approval of a physical sample from the current batch and the permitted variation. For large areas, decide whether units should be mixed between packages or selected by tone and pattern. The Ukrainian granite colours guide explains why a screen does not replace a sample.
Cutting list and drawing revision
The item table should contain a unique row number, quantity, finished dimensions, face finish, edge treatment, holes and drawing reference. Identify every side unambiguously. When a drawing changes, the new revision must replace the old one before production starts. “Same as last time” is insufficient because the previous batch, blank or packing method may differ.
For components with visible pattern direction, add an orientation arrow. For cladding, provide a facade or zone plan. For slabs the buyer will cut, state whether photographs of each blank, numbering and a package map are required. Agree this before cutting rather than after dispatch.
Finish, edges and additional processing
Different surfaces change appearance and care. Compare them in the granite finishes guide. Do not automatically transfer gloss, roughness or slip requirements from another project. Where performance is specified, identify the test method and requirement for the particular product.
Clarify whether thickness calibration, perimeter trimming, chamfers, edge polishing, drilling and cut-outs are included. Otherwise “plate” may describe different levels of completion in different offers.
Packing and loading
Natural stone is heavy and vulnerable at edges. Crate type, component orientation, separators, protection of polished faces and unloading sequence depend on format. Mark packages so the receiver can identify the drawing and zone. Vehicle requirements, load restraint and lifting equipment must be determined by responsible specialists; this article is not a slab-handling safety instruction.
Receiving inspection
Before unloading, check documents and the external condition of crates. After safe placement, compare package count, marking and visible damage. Record observations with photographs and a receiving document. Do not expose hidden surfaces by disrupting a safe packing arrangement. The Natural Stone Institute treats slab handling as a dedicated safety subject; trained personnel and suitable equipment are required.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a minimum quantity for a bulk order?
This article sets no minimum. Batch economics depend on products, blanks, packing and logistics; an individual quotation is required.
Can every plate have exactly the same shade?
Absolute identity is not guaranteed for natural stone. Approve the physical sample, batch and permitted variation.
Are standard slab dimensions always in stock?
This page claims neither permanent stock nor universal sizes. Available blanks and timing are confirmed in the specific offer.
